BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State and WKBC Radio (Wilkesboro, NC) have announced a three-year partnership for WKBC to be the flagship station of Appalachian Sports Network, Director of Athletics Doug Gillin announced on Wednesday.

WKBC is in its 18th year with Appalachian Sports Network this season and has been a part of the network since the station went on air. WKBC-97.3 FM is a 100,000-watt station with the signal originating in North Wilkesboro, reaching Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and the Tri-Cities in addition to Boone, Hickory, Lenoir, and Statesville.

“The Appalachian Sports Network has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with WKBC,” Gillin said. “The station serves as a strong flagship for our network and has a strong, ideal reach for the Appalachian Sports Network across the High Country and in a number of the most important markets for App State Athletics.”

The station is owned by Wilkes Broadcasting Company and has been the ASN’s flagship station since 2001.

“We look forward to continuing our longstanding relationship with App State Athletics and the Appalachian Sports Network,” WKBC owner Bob Brown said. “Appalachian State Athletics and Appalachian State University are an integral part of WKBC’s  footprint and our station’s reach. This partnership remains a natural fit for both WKBC and App State.”

WKBC will continue to carry Appalachian State football and men’s basketball game broadcasts, while also carrying “Mountaineer Talk,” the coaches shows for football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball each week during the season.

“The Voice of the Mountaineers” Adam Witten and color commentator Pierre Banks are back for the second season on the Appalachian Sports Network in 2017. The first broadcast of the season will be “Mountaineer Talk” with Head Football Coach Scott Satterfield prior to the season opener at Georgia on Sept. 2.
