MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Appalachian State opens play at the 2017 Sun Belt Women’s Golf Championships on Monday. The 54-hole event will be played in the Robert Trent Jones “Fighting Joe” Course in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Play begins on Monday morning at the lengthy Fighting Joe. App’s tee times begin at 8:40 a.m. CT off of No. 10. The Mountaineers will play with Arkansas State in the opening round. Coastal Carolina (1), Texas State (2), and Troy (3) are the top seeds for the championship. App State head coach Heather Brown wants consistency from her team to stay in the running on the longer Fighting Joe.

“It’s a new course for us, so we’re going in blind,” Brown said. “We’ve practiced long yardages all week to get ready, and get in the mindset of hitting long approach shots. We need to play smart golf and make pars. If we do that, we could have a pretty good showing. We’re not really a group that relies on someone going low. Our process is more solid, smart golf across the lineup.”

Seniors Emily Stinson and Hannah Craver lead App State in scoring and both are ranked in the Top 30 in the Sun Belt in stroke average. Stinson had a 76.6 average during her senior season and is 16th in the Sun Belt, while Craver is 28th at 77.4, but has been much more consistent in the spring. The duo will be key to App’s success this week.

“They’ve been going to the conference championship since they were freshmen,” Brown said of her seniors. “Last year, we were caught off guard last year and daunted by course. I think they’ve learned from that and are better prepared on a bigger stage. I feel like we have a little more confidence going in.”

THE LINEUP: Appalachian’s lineup will include senior Emily Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) senior Hannah Craver (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Savanna Wood (Boone, N.C.), Joliana Elias (Jamestown, N.C.), and Melany Chong (Mississauga, Ontario).

THE SCHEDULE: Teams will tee off of split tees on Monday and Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. off split tees.

THE COURSE: The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was the first Trail course to break 8,000 yards. The Fighting Joe is long, really long, and this links style course is simply good straight-forward golf. Some say the spectacular 17th hole is the signature hole on the course, but the 18th green overlooking the Tennessee River will distract you with its beauty, if not its treachery.
