BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University wrestling will look to finish undefeated in conference action and win the Southern Conference regular season championship outright when it takes on VMI on Wednesday.

The 17th-ranked Mountaineers (12-2, 6-0 SoCon) last went undefeated in league play in 2011-12 – head coach JohnMark Bentley’s first regular season championship. A win would give App State its most wins since 2011-12 (13-4) and fewest losses since 2002-03 (11-2).

Appalachian is coming off of its most dramatic match of the season when it downed Chattanooga by criteria after tying the Mocs 16-16 through 10 weight classes.

Individually for the Mountaineers, No. 9 senior Denzel Dejournette started things off strong with a huge 10-4 decision victory over then-No. 9 Jared Johnson. The other senior on the team, No. 20 Vito Pasone, followed things up with App’s lone bonus point win of the day, downing Alonzo Allen by 15-4 major decision.

No. 15 sophomore Matt Zovistoski battled hard through the middle of the weight classes where wins were coming in tight decisions. Zovistoski took down Roman Boylen in a 7-3 decision.

Freshman Gavin Londoff edged out Dylanger Potter in a 3-1 decision while Forrest Przybysz shut out Justin Lampe in a 2-0 decision.

VMI has had an up-and-down season, with its lone win coming against Bloomsburg, 29-14, and its best tournament outing coming at the All-Academy Championship where it came in fourth.

Individually for the Keydets, Dalton Henderson and Neal Richards have led the teal at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively. This season, Henderson has amassed a 20-9 record and a 2-1 record in the SoCon, while Richards has a 20-5 overall record and a 3-1 league record.

The action between the two teams is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Cormack Hall.
