BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University No. 9 heavyweight wrestler Denzel Dejournette was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week after his performance in a crucial and dramatic victory for the Mountaineers.

The senior faced took on Chattanooga’s No. 9 heavyweight Jared Johnson to begin what will probably prove to be the most thrilling SoCon duals match of the year.

The two ninth-ranked wrestlers in TrackWrestling and InterMat squared off, with both heavyweights battling hard for the points and for the rivalry. Dejournette came out on the attack early on, but it would be Johnson who would record the first takedown of the match. Dejournette escaped before getting another escape in the second period to even things up at two points apiece.

After the slow start, point-wise, for the Winston-Salem-native, Dejournette found his footing in the third period getting back-to-back takedowns to seal up the match, eventually winning 10-4 with the riding-time advantage.

The win was crucial to the victory over Chattanooga as the match came down to criteria, where the Mountaineers won 55-54 in total match points, clinching at least a share of the SoCon regular-season championship.

The win on Sunday gave Dejournette his 104th career victory, putting him just four wins behind Jeremy Hart (1996-2001), who ranks fourth on Appalachian State wrestling’s all-time win list.

This is also the sixth time in his career that the senior has won the Southern Conference’s weekly wrestling award, placing the reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Year in a tie for third on the conference's all-time list.
