Ask The AD – Bowl Recap Edition

App State seems to be a good fit for the Camellia Bowl, but with 40 bowl games, I am hoping there will new locations and better exposure for my Mountaineers in the future. Do you see the Sun Belt's bowl options changing?

The Sun Belt currently has five bowl affiliations; New Orleans, Mobile, Montgomery, Orlando and Tucson. This is the most bowl tie-ins in the history of the Sun Belt. There have been times, in the Sun Belt, when there were more bowl eligible teams then available tie-ins. This year the Sun Belt had six bowl eligible teams (South Alabama received a waiver at 6-6). At this time, there are not any plans to add more bowls.  The past two years there have been more bowls then bowl eligible teams.  The Camellia Bowl has one of the better dates and TV time slots of all the Sun Belt bowls. The Camellia Bowl is also on ESPN, which provides national exposure for Appalachian State (2 million viewers in 2015, 1.5 million in 2016). The Bowl Executives, ESPN and conference commissioners collaborate on bowl team selection, although the final decision is with the Bowl.  We have our annual Winter Athletic Director Meetings in early January. The topic of bowl games, location and selection of teams, is on the agenda.

When do season tickets go on sale for the 2017 season? Any major changes for this season?

Football season tickets for the 2017 season will go on sale at the beginning of January. We’re very excited about our home slate, including a visit from Wake Forest to Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sept. 23. Purchasing season tickets will be the best way to guarantee tickets for Wake Forest's visit to Boone. We are NOT making any major changes to our season ticket structure for the 2017 season. Season tickets will be $210 this year. They were $200 last year. We will have great conference schedule announced soon with premium league opponents and rivals visiting Boone. For our home opener against Savannah State, we will be honoring our 2007 Team, their National Championship and their win against Michigan. We have set a goal of 7,000 season tickets for this year. Last year we sold a little over 6,000 tickets. Season football tickets sales are vital to our ability to continue to provide opportunities for all of our student-athletes.

When will the 2017 football schedule be released?

The completed schedule with dates will likely be announced in March. The football schedule is a three-step process. We have our non-conference schedule set, and know our Sun Belt opponents, then, the conference schedule is completed with dates. We are at the point right now where we know who we will play in 2017 and will announce those opponents this week.

We will continue to work with ESPN to set the dates for Sun Belt games. Once that schedule is completed, and ESPN gives us the go ahead, we will announce our complete 2017 football schedule.
