BOONE, N.C. — After a little over two weeks off for the holidays, No. 17 Appalachian State University wrestling prepares to return to the mat on Sunday, Jan. 1 as part of the Southern Scuffle hosted at Chattanooga.
The two-day event opens the new year on Jan. 1 at 10 a.m. and will have the Mountaineers (7-2, 3-0 Southern Conference) face off against wrestlers from Air Force, Campbell, Cleveland State, Cornell, Drexel, Duke, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, Lehigh, Minnesota, Missouri, Navy, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma State, Penn, Stanford, The Citadel, Utah Valley and Virginia.
The 17th-ranked Black and Gold are coming off a nail-biting loss to No. 5 Missouri on Dec. 20 – just their second of the season. Freshman Colby Smith is currently riding a five-match win streak at 133 pounds and has an impressive 15-4 record this season overall. Junior Nick Kee will look to remain unbeaten after starting the season 5-0.
Sophomore 149-pounder Matt Zovistoski and reigning SoCon Wrestler of the Week senior 125-pounder Vito Pasone had five-match win streaks snapped at Missouri but both remain ranked nationally in their respective weight classes.
Senior heavyweight Denzel Dejournette will look to extend his five made win streak, having won 14 of 16 matches this season.
Live scoring and streaming will be available at FloWrestling online.
