BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University head softball coach Janice Savage announced her signing class of 2017 on Monday. She welcomes nine new Mountaineers to Boone for the 2017-18 season.

“I am very happy to add this group of young ladies to our App State family,” said coach Savage. "They will enhance our program athletically, academically and personally and I am very proud to officially have them in Black and Gold. They have worked very hard to get where they are, and I am thankful we could share in their dream of playing college softball. With the addition of these young ladies, we are excited to continue to see our program grow and reach new levels.”

JACIE ARRINGTON | Utility |  5-9 | Sanford, N.C. |  Lee County

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE:  “I am happy to add Jacie to our program. We look for her to add depth to our roster with her athleticism and drive to be the best softball player she can be. Her biggest impact will be with her swing pushing to break into the lineup with her power.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Accumulated a batting average of .482 as a freshman, .568 as a sophomore and .530 as a junior, and owned a fielding percentage of .785 as a shortstop her junior year … earned All-Conference, All-District, and All-State honors for three consecutive years … was awarded All-District Player of the Year her sophomore and junior year … batted .510 and fielded .827 on her club team in the fall of 2016.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Jen and Charles Arrington … sister of Chase Arrington … father played football and baseball for Guildford College and brother plays football and baseball for Gardner-Webb … born on April 25, 1999.

KAYLA FREDENDALL | Catcher/Utility |  5-9 | Plain City, Ohio |  Jonathan Alder

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “Kayla will add to our battery next year and can add to our corner infield.  She is one of the most athletic and versatile players I have seen. She is a lefty power hitter who will push to be one of the fastest kids on our roster. We look for her to contribute to the team right away on the field and continue her success in the classroom as well. We are thankful she is coming to us from Ohio and joining our App State family.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Owns a career batting average of .435  … was selected to the Underclassmen State Team as a junior … earned Second-Team All-Conference honors as a sophomore … grabbed Honorable Mention All-Conference honors as a freshman … lettered all four years in softball … snatched top-two finishes in several top softball tournaments on her club team including, Ohio States, GAPPS and Stingrays, and earned a batting average of .388.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Stacey and Hugh Fredendall … sister of Lane Fredendall … born on March 20, 1999 … plans to major in Special Education and minor in Psychology to become an elementary school teacher.

BAYLEE MORTON |  Catcher |  5-10 | Monroe, N.C. | Parkwood

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “I am overjoyed to add more depth to our catching position. Baylee is a naturally gifted young lady who commands her pitchers and team to follow her. Her fun personality and passion for the game will allow her to fit right in and take a leadership role for us. I look for her power to make an immediate impact in our lineup as well.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Earned varsity letters in basketball, softball and volleyball … was a Union County Weekly First-Team selection in softball and basketball … three-time All-Conference member in softball ... was her high school’s top slugger, was voted MVP and led in RBI … in basketball, averaged 15 ppg and ten rpg and grabbed All-Conference honors for three years … was Honorable Mention in her conference for volleyball.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Lisa Morton … sister of Brandon Morton … born on February 27, 1999. 

KYRAH PHELIX |  Outfield | 5-5 | Indian Trail, N.C. | Piedmont

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “We were looking to add more speed to our roster, and we found that in Kyrah.  Her speed and work ethic will be used to enhance our program, as well as her glove in the outfield. She is working hard daily in the weight room to continue to improve for us. We are very happy to add her to our Black and Gold family.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Has a career .348 batting average, .417 on base percentage, 227 at-bats, 79 hits, 68 runs and 40 stolen bases … four-time letterwinner in softball and two-time letterwinner in track … earned All-State, All-District and All-Conference honors as a sophomore and junior … was selected as the 2016 Offensive Player of the Year … won a gold medal in 2016 and a silver medal in 2014 at the Softball NC State Games … totaled a .514 batting average, a .524 on base percentage, 72 at-bats, 37 hits, 32 runs and 22 stolen bases on the SC Elite club team.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Nicole and Jason Phelix … sister of Jaeden Phelix … her father played football for SUNY Cortland and made an ECAC Bowl appearance in 1995 and made a NCAA playoff appearance in 1997 … her mother played field hockey for SUNY Cortland and won the 1994 NCAA DIII National Championship … born on February 2, 1999 … major is undecided and plans to become a coach.

JULIANNA ROUPAS | Pitcher | 5-10 | Matthews, N.C. | Providence Day School

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE:  “We are happy to add Roupas to our pitching staff. She is a hard worker on the field and in the classroom coming in with over a 4.0 GPA. Her continued work in the weight room will help her grow into a great pitcher for us in the circle.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Owned an ERA of 1.5 and lower for four years of play … four-time letterwinner in softball and earned a varsity letter in volleyball … was an All-State selection as a sophomore and junior … snagged All-Conference honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior … on her 16u club team, she finished sixth at the ASA Nationals, second at the Colorado Sparkler/Fireworks Tournament and fifth at the 16u Triple Crown Nationals.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Donna and Taso Roupas … sister of Adam and Alexander Roupas … born on October 9, 1998.

ALEXA SELL | Catcher/Utility | 5-7 | Richfield, N.C. |  North Stanly

   

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “It has been her dream to play college softball, and she has worked hard for this dream to become a reality. Alexa can play almost every position, which allows her to contribute to our program in many ways. She has the potential to supply many home runs, as well as stealing many bases for us too. She is another tremendous athlete who has great potential, and her work ethic will help her achieve any goals she sets. I am proud she chose to be a Mountaineer!”

HIGH SCHOOL: Garnered a batting average of .525 as a freshman, .328 as a sophomore and .470 as a junior … four-time letterwinner in softball, basketball and volleyball, and two-time letterwinner in swimming … earned All-County honors as a junior, All-District honors as a freshman and junior, All-Conference honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior and All-State honors as a freshman and junior … was crowned the 2016 UAC Regional Champion and 2016 NC State Runner-Up … was voted most improved on her basketball team.

PERSONAL: Full name is Lauren Alexa Sells … daughter of Tommy and Tracy Sells … sister of Dakota and Hunter Sells … born on December 1, 1998 … plans to major in Exercise Science and attend Physical Therapy School.

KENZIE SMITH | Outfield | 5-6 | Mocksville, N.C. | Davie County

 

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “Kenzie’s hard work, hustle and love of the game of softball caught our attention early on. She always finds a way to get the job done and puts the team first. I look for her to push our team and add depth to our infield. She is an amazing young lady who truly bleeds black and gold!”

HIGH SCHOOL: Owns a .341 batting average, a .425 on base percentage and a .507 slugging percentage from 76 hits, 20 doubles, three home runs, and 60 RBI … has fielded 19 double plays … three-time letterwinner in softball … earned All-District honors for three years, grabbed All-Conference honors for two years, and snagged All-State honors her sophomore year … was crowned Defensive Player of the year as a junior … was a team captain as a sophomore … was named an NC Scholar-Athlete as a freshman, sophomore and junior.

PERSONAL: Full name is MaKenzie Dawn Smith … daughter of Fred and Julie Smith … sister of Anna Smith … great uncle, Fred Campbell, played basketball at East Carolina … born on October 31, 1998 … plans to major in Exercise Science and receive a Master’s degree to become a Physician’s Assistant.

KARI WESTERBEEK | Infield | 5-8 | Warsaw, N.C. | East Duplin

 

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “Kari is the type of student, person and player we want in our program. Coming off of a great junior year, we look for her bat to continue to stay her strong suit, and I’m proud to add her home run potential to our program. I look for her hard work to pay off for her senior year, and for that success to continue to us here at Appalachian.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Mustered up a batting average of .533, an on base percentage of .655,  a slugging percentage of .916, 76 RBI and 11 home runs … three-year letterwinner in softball … earned All-District, All-Conference and All-State honors her freshman, sophomore and junior year … was crowned Softball Rookie of the Year as a freshman … won Player of the Year and MVP as a sophomore … grabbed Offensive Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior.

PERSONAL: Daughter of Kraig and Danna Westerbeek … sister of Kyndall, Kelli and Karsyn Westerbeek … born on May 14, 1999 … plans to major in Special Education.

AVERY WHEATLEY | Middle Infield | 5-8 | Delmar, Del. | Delmar Middle and Senior

 

SAVAGE'S NOTE: “Avery is a tremendous athlete with great foot speed. I have been extremely impressed with her offensive and defensive improvements over the last year and a half. She has added power to her offensive game which makes her slapping even more effective. I look for her to push for a spot in the middle infield for us as well as potentially lead off.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Batted .565, had an on base percentage of .604 and stole 22 bases in 18 games her junior year … accumulated a .444 batting average, a .487 on base percentage and stole 20 bases on her softball club team … earned varsity letters in softball and volleyball … was a First-Team All-Conference selection in softball her freshman, sophomore and junior year … grabbed First-Team All-State honors as a sophomore and junior … was voted MVP on her softball team in 2016 … was a member of the Delaware District 3 Big League World Series Team in 2016 … in volleyball, she snatched First-Team All-Conference honors her sophomore and junior year.

PERSONAL: Daughter of John and Jennifer Wheatley … sister of Bethany and Courtney Wheatley … sister Bethany played softball at Delaware Tech from 2012-14 … born on September 13, 1999 … major is undecided.
