BOONE, N.C.  – Appalachian State University head track and field coach John Weaver announced the track program’s indoor and outdoor schedule on Thursday. The 2016-17 track campaign will begin in early December and will feature two home indoor meets and one outdoor collegiate competition in Boone.

“We are fortunate to be in an area that has a large amount of track programs who are successful and provide a high level of competition” said coach Weaver. “We hope that we do the same for them. Our schedule reflects the fact that we do not have to travel far to get quality competition. This year’s schedule verifies this truth. Our athletes will be challenged at each meet which will help them accomplish high conference rankings and NCAA Championship qualifying opportunities. Every schedule points towards these two destinations at the end of the season, the Sun Belt Conference Championship and the NCAA National Championship. We work through our scheduling to give our athletes these goals.”

App State will commence the indoor season in Winston-Salem at the JDL Meet on Saturday, Dec. 3.

The next three track meets fall in the new year, starting with the ETSU Meet on Jan. 13-14 in Johnson City. One week later, the Mountaineers will host their first home meet on Jan. 20-21 (Mountaineer NCAA Indoor Meet). Lastly, Appalachian will end January competition in Huntington, W.V. for the Marshall Invitational on Jan. 27-28.

For the month of February, the Black and Gold will compete in three track meets, the ETSU Invitational (Feb. 3-4), the Birmingham Invitational (Feb. 11) and the Appalachian Split Meet (Feb. 17), before traveling down to Birmingham, Ala. to face off against Sun Belt opponents at the indoor championships on Feb. 20-21. After battling for the Sun Belt crown, Mountaineers that round out the top 16 nationally in their respective events will roll down to College Station, Texas for the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Mar. 10-11.

Appalachian will open up the outdoor season at the High Point Invitational in High Point, N.C on Mar. 17-18. Then the Mountaineers will participate in two back-to-back road meets on Mar. 24-25 for the USC and Raleigh Relays and on Mar. 30-Apr. 1 for the Florida Relays.

In April, the Mountaineers will host two competitions, the Appalachian HS Invitational (Apr. 8) and the Mountaineer NCAA Outdoor Meet (Apr. 28-29). App State’s road contests in April will include the UNC Charlotte Open (Apr. 14-15) and the Duke Invitational (Apr. 21-22).

Before the outdoor conference championships, the Apps will bus down to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Tennessee Open on May 6 to finalized their gameplan to take on the Sun Belt at the outdoor championships on May 12-14 in Arlington, Texas.

After the outdoor championships, Mountaineers who fall inside the top 48 in the east region in their respective event will travel to Lexington, Ky. for the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 25-27. Student-athletes who then finish in the top-12 at the preliminary round will represent the High Country at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
