BURLINGTON, N.C. – Appalachian State University men’s golf finished tied for ninth in the 2016 Elon Phoenix Invitational at the Alamance Country Club on Tuesday. The Mountaineers finished the final round of the tournament with a total score of 861 (+9).

Appalachian State shot 288 and 287 in the first two rounds, respectively, before shooting a 284 to round out the tournament.

Leading the Mountaineers and continuing a strong year was Alex Burris who had back-to-back 69s to start the tournament before having a 67 in round three to finish eight-under (205) to finish tied for fourth overall. 

Behind Burris was Walter Brinker who finished with a tournament score of 216 (tied-36th) after shooting a 70, 74 and 74 during the event. Chance Watson finished one stroke behind him at 217 (tied-42nd) after carding a 74, 71 and 72.

Rounding out the team was Tripp Summerlin who shot an 80, 73 and 75 to finish with a tournament score of 228 (tied-77th) and Patrick Moriarty who shot a 230 after a 75, 77 and 78.

The Mountaineers finished out the fall portion of their 2016-17 schedule and will now be off until they return in the spring with the Stetson University Invitational in Longwood, Fla. The tournament will take place Monday, Feb. 27 through Tuesday, Feb. 28.
