BOONE, N.C.  – Appalachian State University men’s cross country will hit the course this Friday, Oct. 14 in Kernersville, N.C. at High Point University’s VertCross Invitational. The men’s 8k competition will kickoff at 4:30 p.m.

“This VertCross meet is on a European style 2000m loop course, and is very spectator friendly,” said head coach Michael Curcio. “ Many of our athletes are familiar with the Ivey Redmon facility and the course at Beeson Park because the North Carolina High School state meet is held there, and we ran it last year. The team has really focused more on interval training. Combining this transition with cool weather and a faster course, we are looking to see some faster times. We’ll need that to do well at the Sun Belt meet.”

“We finished third last year on this course,” continued Curcio. “This year we look to compete with Campbell, George Mason and Davidson, all ahead of us in the regional rankings. Elon and High Point have some very talented young men as well. It will be a good matchup of some teams that have regionally ranking aspirations. I think the guys have recovered from the UVA meet two weeks ago. We’ve seen some solid progress and are seeing that weather will be less of a factor.”

The Mountaineers will compete against 23 teams including Bridgewater, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Davidson, Duke, East Carolina, Elon, Fayetteville State, George Mason, High Point University, Longwood, Marshall, Methodist, Northern Kentucky, Richmond, UNC Wilmington, USC Upstate, The Citadel, VMI, Western Carolina, Winston-Salem State and Wofford.

Last Time on the Grass

Chris Kelly was the sole Mountaineer to compete at the USC Upstate Invitational on Oct. 1. The North Carolina native ran a time of 27:10.62 in the 8k to place 58th.
