BOONE, N.C. -  Four fall tournaments, seven home matches in the spring and the Sun Belt Tournament highlight the 2016-17 slate for Appalachian State University men’s tennis. The schedule was announced by head coach Bob Lake on Wednesday.

After opening the fall season last weekend at UNC Wilmington, the Mountaineers will return to action Oct. 7-9 at the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C. Three days later, the Apps will partake in the ITA Carolina Regionals in Durham, N.C., on the campus of Duke University.

Appalachian will then conclude the fall slate with the Charlotte Tournament during the final weekend of October.

“The fall is geared to help the guys improve on their game and translate that to the spring when the matches count towards team results, “ stated Lake. “We had a solid first tournament last weekend, and I’m excited to see how much we get better before the fall ends.”

App's spring slate will be the first for as much as four newcomers in Alex Pavkovich, Milo Bargeron, Alexander Free and Galen Arney.

Appalachian will open up the season on Jan. 21 against UNC Wilmington in Wilmington followed by a pair of home matches on the 29th against Lees-McRae and Presbyterian.  The Mountaineers will then play the next 10 contests on the road in seven different locations. Appalachian will begin the road swing against UNC Asheville (Feb. 4) before making the trek to Greenville, N.C. to play host ECU and Richmond on the 11th and 12th.

In Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Apps will square off against Coastal Carolina and Campbell Feb. 17-18. The Chanticleers will be the first Sun Belt opponent Appalachian plays this season.

A week later, the Black and Gold will play Wofford (2/25) and Winthrop the following day in Rock Hill, S.C.  After the South Carolina road trip, Valparaiso awaits on March 9 in Chapel Hill for a neutral-site match. The Mountaineers will then play four matches in five days against Mercer (3/11), Bethune-Cookman (3/12), Eastern Illinois (3/14) and Oral Roberts (3/15), all on the road.

App State will finally return home for the final five matches of the season, beginning with UNC Greensboro on March 31 and continuing with USC Upstate (4/1), Georgia Southern (4/2), Gardner-Webb (4/3) and Davidson (4/15).

The next week the Sun Belt Championships will take place in New Orleans April 19-22. Appalachian defeated then-defending Sun Belt Champion, Troy for its first-ever SCB Tournament win to advance to the semifinals.

App State's 14 wins last year was the most for the program since 2012. The Mountaineers will return the likes of Scott Webster, Trey Morris and Jack Maddocks this season to spearhead a young group.
