HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Appalachian State University baseball redshirt sophomore RHP Luke Watts received first team All-Coastal Plain League recognition as a starting pitcher after spending the summer with the Morehead City Marlins, the CPL announced on Tuesday.

Each team features 24 players: One player per each infield position, four designated hitter/utility players, five outfielders, six starting pitchers and four relief pitchers. Watts is the only student-athlete representing a Sun Belt home university on the first team, while Georgia Southern had a student-athlete make the second team.

The right-handed pitcher finished third in the CPL on the mound in ERA with 2.77 in 10 appearances. Watts finished with a 4-1 record with 58 strikeouts, allowing just 51 hits and 16 earned runs in 61.2 innings pitched. His 58 strikeouts were good for third in the CPL. This season, the Marlins finished 30-25 (16-12 Second Half), finishing fifth in the CPL East.

Watts is no stranger to the CPL, having played in 2015 as well. He played well enough in his first year to be named the Carteret County News-Times Marlins Player of the Week award (July 15) after being the only Marlin with more than 10 innings pitched and an ERA under 2.00. He had a 1.88 ERA in 14.1 innings.

The Taylorsville-native made 17 relief appearances in 2016 for the Mountaineers, finishing 1-1 on the year. In just 29.0 innings pitched, Watts had 24 strikeouts, only allowing 28 hits and 12 earned runs for a 2.48 ERA. He finished third in appearances and fourth in caught stealing by (five).
