The Mountaineers trailed the Hoyas 4-3 with less than three minutes left until junior Hanna French delivered a pass to freshman Taylor Cimbalist on the left side of the goal. Cimbalist fielded the pass and delivered a shot to the left corner of net to tie the game at four.
The Mountaineers did not play for overtime after that goal. A misguided pass from a Georgetown player was stolen by senior Laura Malinoski right on the edge but inside the circle and she fired a shot that was tipped by freshman Micaela Diedericks and scored by Sheridan to seal the victory for the Mountaineers.
It only took Appalachian nine minutes to score its first goal. Jordyn Warren found herself alone after a fast break and scored to put the Apps up 1-0. The Hoyas rebounded with two goals nearly eight minutes apart until senior Dana Wetmore found a diving Diedericks to put Appalachian back on the board. Georgetown would score two more goals before Cimbalist and Sheridan’s magic.
Behind the net for Appalachian was sophomore Cristina Ceppi. Ceppi got the win for the Mountaineers playing all 70 minutes and moved to 1-0 on the season. Rosalie Nolen recorded the loss for the Hoyas.
Appalachian will continue action at home as Ball State will visit Boone on Labor Day. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
