The Appalachian State University softball team will play at home for the final time in 2014 when it hosts ETSU on Wednesday with a first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
The Mountaineers took two dominating wins earlier this season on the road at ETSU in a doubleheader. The Apps took game one 9-2 and finished off the Buccaneers in five innings with a 10-1 run-rule victory.
In both games, the Apps pounded out 26 hits which includes a former season-high 15 hits in the first game. The Black and Gold topped that total last weekend with 20 hits against UNCG in the wild circus of a game two in which the Apps lost 20-19.
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
ETSU comes into Wednesday's single game with a 20-29 overall record this season and are currently 7-15 in Atlantic Sun play. The Bucs are also a dismal 3-13 on the road so far this season after droppings its first 10 road matchups.
Katie Wolff leads the Bucs in hitting with a .388 averag while also hitting three home runs and driving in 18 RBIs. Wolff went 2-for-6 earlier in the season against the Mountaineers with an RBI double in game two.
Jackie Baird is second on the team in average, hitting at a .338 clip. Baird also has hit 20 home runs and driven in 50 runs to lead the Bucs in both categories. The Apps were able to neutralize Baird as she was 0-for-6 in two games.
Leading the pitchers is Taylor Carter who has gone 13-9 with a 3.66 ERA this season while pitching in a team-leading 141.2 innings. Carter has struck out 58 batters to just 14 walks in 2014. Katie Wolff and and Whitney Leon hav both posted ERA's above 5.72 in 85.2 innings and 75.1 innings, respectively. Leon has pitched to a 6.13 ERA.
Both Wolff and Leon have walked more than they have struck out this season with a combined 83 walks to just 56 strikeouts.
As a team, the Bucs have been fairly successful on the basepaths with 31 stolen bases in 36 attempts. ETSU has hit 44 home runs, 48 doubles and scored 198 runs this season with a team batting average of .257.
