SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's track and field finished up the first day of competition at the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet, where they currently stand in third place.

Raphael Rojas qualified for two finals on Sunday, placing first in the 400m preliminary round and seventh in the 800m preliminary round.

William Buckley and Marshall McRae placed third and fourth in the preliminary round of the 100m dash, qualifying for Sunday's finals. Antonio Marcano Jr. also qualified for the finals, taking the last spot with an eighth-place finish. Buckley and McRae qualified for another final when they finished third and sixth in the 200m dash..

Josh Cox led the team in the 3,000m steeplechase, placing second and recording eight points with a time of 9:14.82, his best mark all season.

Nathan Milch led the throwers and gained four points for the Mountaineers, posting a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 156-9.00, a new personal record.

Phillip Thomas was sixth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-3 and recording three points for the Apps. The Appalachian jumpers earned a total of 15 points for the team score as Henry Bustle placed third, Jamal Tiller placed fourth and Jesse Earnhardt followed in fifth. Bustle's mark of 23-4.00 was a new personal best.

The Mountaineers are in third-place in the standings after day one of competition with 37 points. They trail Samford (59 points) and Western Carolina (45 points).

Appalachian will finish up the SoCon Championships on Sunday, with awards being presented in the afternoon.
