BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's tennis and its five all-Southern Conference open play at the 2014 SoCon Championships when it takes on No. 5 Samford in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Mountaineers (9-12, 6-3 SoCon) finished the regular season with two wins in their last three matches to earn the No. 4 seed and a first-round by while the Bulldogs (8-9, 5-3) enter the tournament on a three-match winning streak.
Appalachian picked up a 4-3 win when the teams met during the regular season thanks to a doubles-point win and victories at No. 3-5 singles. App State is led in singles play by three SoCon all-freshman honorees in No. 2 Oliver Casey, No. 3 Daniel Hoang and No. 5 Jack Maddocks.
Casey led the Apps in singles wins on the season, compiling a 13-7 record, and went 10-8 at No. 2 singles where he paired with Hoang. Maddocks finished with a 12-9 mark as a freshman including a team-best 7-2 in league play while Hoang compiled a record of 9-11 and was 5-3 against SoCon foes.
Two doubles pairings also earned all-league honors for Appalachian. Zach Bost/Sebastien King earned first team all-SoCon accolades as they went 12-5 at No. 1 doubles while the No. 2 team of Casey/Hoang earned second team honors.
Samford is led by a trio of all-league honorees in Elliot Barnwell, Fares Kilani and Liam Sullivan. Barnwell was a first-team selection after finishing 12-5 overall, 7-1 in SoCon play, at No. 1 singles while Kilani and Sullivan were second-team honorees.
Kilani went 10-7 at the No. 2 spot in singles play and Sullivan finished 9-7 while splitting time at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Appalachian State and Samford last met in the postseason during the 2012 SoCon Tournament as the Bulldogs earned a 4-2 win in the semifinals.
