SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State sophomore Clare Cox has been named as the Southern Conference women's tennis Player of the Week for matches played March 31-April 6, the league announced on Tuesday.

Cox helped the Mountaineers to a 2-1 record last week while finishing a perfect 6-0 in singles and doubles play in wins over Western Carolina (6-1) and Wofford (5-2) and a loss to Elon (4-3).

While playing at the top spot for Appalachian in singles, she picked up wins over Elon's Jordan Johnston (6-2, 7-5), Wofford's Sarah Evans (7-6 [7-3], 6-0) and Western Carolina's Stacia Kissell (6-4, 3-6, 10-7). Her 3-0 mark in singles play moved her to 9-11 on the season and 5-4 in league play.

In doubles action, Cox paired with McKayla Zupan to earn wins against the Phoenix pair of Maria Ruiz/Frida Jansaker (8-6) before downing Wofford’s Taylor Carison/Kalli Karas (8-1). Cox and Zupan closed the week with an 8-7 (7-3) victory over WCU’s Megan McLinden and Nicole Kelley as the duo won their fourth-straight match and improved to 4-2 as a team this year.

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Cox's career and the first for a Mountaineer since Anja Gugger earned the accolade in the first week of the 2006 campaign.

Cox and the Mountaineers close out the regular season on Thursday when they host Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. before heading to the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. from April 16-19.
