SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After amassing 601 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in four games, Appalachian State University true freshman running back Marcus Cox has been named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month for November, the league office announced on Thursday.

Cox rushed for 551 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns in four November games, going over the 100-yard mark in three of the four contests (the only exception being the Nov. 9 contest at Georgia when he managed a respectable 59 yards on the ground against the SEC’s Bulldogs). He also caught eight passes for 50 yards and a touchdown to account for 37.3 percent of Appalachian State’s 1,613 yards from scrimmage and 76.9 percent of the team’s 13 offensive touchdowns during the month.

He capped the impressive month by setting Appalachian State freshman records with 215 rushing yards and four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) in the Mountaineers’ season-ending 48-27 victory over longtime rival Western Carolina. In the process, he set school records for rushing yards (1,250) and touchdowns (21) by a freshman.

Cox was named the SoCon’s Freshman of the Week three times in November and set a new conference record by earning the award six times on the season. He was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches and media, was a first-team all-conference honoree and is a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, which will be presented to the nation’s top NCAA Division I FCS freshman on Dec. 16.

Cox is the third Appalachian State freshman to ever be named a SoCon Player of the Month, joining Armanti Edwards (Nov. 2006) and D.J. Smith (Nov. 2007).
