BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University volleyball fell 3-1 to Samford on Friday night at the Holmes Center in four sets featuring scores of 22-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 24-16.

The Mountaineers got the early 7-3 lead in the first set before the Bulldogs would come charging back, scoring six straight points to pull ahead 14-10. Samford would not give up the lead for the rest of the set, taking the first 25-22.

The Apps would score seven straight points to begin the second set, taking the lead 11-4. Samford would rally to come within two points and make the score16-14, but the Mountaineers continue to score, winning the second set 25-18.

The third set began with two quick Appalachian points, but Samford would regain composure to pull ahead 6-3. Despite scoring four straight points to come within two points, Appalachian could not find the lead for the rest of the set, giving up the third-set win to Samford 25-22.

The fourth set would be a battle, featuring 14 tied scores throughout the set. Points woud be scored back-and-forth between the teams as one would attempt to pull ahead for good. With the score tied at 24, Samford would find two kills to win the set 26-24 and take the match 3-1.

Emily Corrigan led the Mountaineers in kills, tallying 13 on the night, while Lauren Gray followed with 11.

Meghan Mahoney found 14 digs on the match and Paige Brown assisted on 37 kills for Appalachian.

Michaela Reesor tallied an impressive 20 kills on the match for Samford, while Chelsi Carter recorded a match-high 19 digs.

The Bulldogs hit just a .203 percentage, but held the Mountaineers to hitting .138 on the night. Samford blocked nine hits, while App State had seven.

The Mountainers will return to action on Saturday for a 7 p.m. match against Chattanooga in the Holmes Center. Appalachian will celebrate Senior Night by recognizing seniors Lauren Brown and Lindsey Sauls.
