BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State University men’s soccer program will begin their quest to a Southern Conference tournament title on Saturday at Elon. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (4-7-6, 1-4-1) have won a game in the conference tournament each of the last three seasons, including a 2-1 victory over College of Charleston last season. The Mountaineers last faced Elon in the conference tournament in 2010. App State welcomed the Phoenix to Boone with a 1-0 victory.

Elon comes into the match slated as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Phoenix finished 13-4-1 overall this season and will enter Saturday’s match as the No. 20 team in the country according to College Soccer America and No. 21 in the College Soccer News poll. Jason Waterman leads the Phoenix offensively with 25 points, which puts him in a tie for first in the conference.
Senior goalkeeper Danny Free sits third in the conference in saves (65) and saves per game (3.82) with Stanley Broaden leading the team in points with 14. Under current head coach Matt Nelson, the Mountaineers are 2-2 in conference tournament action.
