BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis head coach Colin Crothers revealed his squad's schedule for the upcoming 2014 campaign on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers, who will play in three Fall tune-up tournaments, return six players from last year's squad that finished 14-9, including a 6-4 mark in Southern Conference play.
Appalachian will face several tough non-conference opponents in 2014 in addition to its always-challenging SoCon slate. Included in the schedule are nine home matches that include non-conference tilts with UNC-Asheville (Feb. 5), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 15), Lees-McRae (Feb. 26) and East Carolina (Feb. 28).
The season begins with an in-state showdown at Wake Forest on Jan. 25 before the Apps travel to ETSU the following day. Appalachians first home match, which is slated to take place at Yonahlossee Racquet Club, comes against UNC-Asheville on Feb. 5.
In all, the Mountaineers will play three matches at Yonahlossee at the beginning of the season. The home matches with Gardner-Webb and Lees-McRae are also slated to be played indoors.
Appalachian will play its first outdoor home match against East Carolina on Feb. 28 before opening SoCon play at home against Samford on March 1. The team will also travel to Charleston, S.C. as it closes out its non-conference slate against College of Charleston (March 9), Richmond (March 10), North Carolina (March 11) and Southern Miss (March 12).
The Mountaineers play Georgia Southern, Chattanooga and Furman on the road following their trip to Charleston before returning home for three-straight with UNCG (March 27), Davidson (March 29) and Elon (April 1). A trip to Wofford takes place before the regular-season finale at home against Western Carolina on April 6.
The 2014 SoCon Tennis Championships are scheduled for April 17-20 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
