FARMVILLE, Va. – Appalachian State University field hockey was defeated on Saturday in its first conference match against Longwood.
The Lancers got on the board early by scoring off a shot by Jessica Diaz at the 1:27 minute mark. Longwood struck again in the 24th minute when Jennifer Burris scored off of a breakaway down the field and through the defense.
The Mountaineers would not find the net for the entire first half and part of the second as Longwood continued to score with one goal from Stacey de Grandhomme at the 37:11 minute and two back to back goals from Hollie MacDonald, making the score 5-0.
Sophomore forward Caroline Phillips put the Apps on the board by scoring off of a rebound and around the keeper at the 48:37 minute mark.
The goal would not be enough as Longwood scored three more times to round out the match off the sticks of Burris, Lindsey Lysher and Grandhomme.
The Mountaineers ended up with eight total shots on the match, in comparison to Longwood’s 21 shots.
Junior forward Jessi Stuart and junior defender Laura Malinoski ended the match with one shot each, while junior midfielder Dana Wetmore, junior forward Jordyn Warren and Phillips each accrued two shots.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson started her third match of the season, recording 10 saves.
The Black and Gold will be back in action on Tuesday Sept. 17 in the first home match of the season against Davidson.
