BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University men’s soccer fell to the High Point Panthers by a 2-0 tally in its final exhibition game of the preseason.

The game was slow to get started with most of the action in the middle of the field. As the game went on, App State and High Point became extremely physical in their style of play. 27 total fouls were dished out in the contest – 14 for the Mountaineers and 13 for the Panthers.

It was a scoreless first half with High Point breaking through in the 62nd minute on a free kick by Austin Yearwood on the right side just outside the box. Yearwood’s shot grazed the head of an Appalachian player, but it still bent around and found the left side of the net beating Paul West (Apex, N.C./Apex) – who got the nod in goal for head coach Matt Nelson’s squad.

High Point was able to put the game out of reach with a score in the 88th minute off the foot of Chris Ramsell from about 30-yards out. Ramsell’s shot was a rocket that that a fully stretched and diving West couldn’t get a hand on.

Yearwood led his squad in shots with three – all of which were on target, including his goal. Senior Harrison Delbridge (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Boughton) led the Mountaineers with four shots – three were on goal.

The shots were pretty even in the match – High Point with an advantage of nine to eight. West made four saves on the night matching Ryan Massey who also made four saves while earning the shutout for the Panthers.

Appalachian State will play its regular-season opener on Friday, Aug. 30 when they host Marshall. The match is set for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
