BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University men's tennis coach Bob Lake announced his 2013-14 schedule on Thursday. The Mountaineers will host five home matches, while facing top-ranked Southern Conference opponent Elon and defending champion Samford on the road.
"The schedule is again very tough with four teams that made the final 64 NCAA field. Included are NC State, ETSU, Coastal Carolina and UNCW. We have not played NC State since 2001, and have not played Coastal Carolina in my 14 years at App," said Lake.
Despite a tough run last season, Coach Lake remains positive, "it is our final year in SoCon, and with the new players coming in I am looking forward to compete up top in an always very tough conference. New players include Daniel Hoang (Canada), Ollie Casey (Australia), Eric Greene and Chris Mahan— both from North Carolina."
The Mountaineers will ready for spring competition with four fall tournaments. Appalachian opens play at the Davidson Tournament on October 4 and 5, followed by the Wofford Tournament on Oct. 12-13. North Carolina will host the NCAA ITA Regionals from Oct. 17-20, and the Apps will wrap up fall preparation at the Charleston Tournament on Nov. 1-3.
The Apps will begin their spring campaign on January 19 against defending Colonial Athletic Association champion UNC Wilmington, followed by a trip to East Tennessee State on Jan. 25.
Appalachian will host its first home match against in-state rival UNC Asheville on February 16 before kicking off an eight-match road slate with a weekend trip to include Coastal Carolina on February 21 and Richmond on Feb. 22.
From there, the Black and Gold will open league play against reigning SoCon champion Samford on March 2 in Birmingham, Alabama. The Mountaineers will seek redemption after falling just short of a win against the No. 74-ranked Bulldogs in a 4-3 neck-and-neck match last season.
Appalachian will then head to Raleigh on March 7, where they will take on NC State in their final competition before spring break.
App continues road play with four non-conference opponents, including spring break matchups against Stetson, Bethune Cookman, and Florida A&M (March 12-14) in Daytona Beach, followed by trips to Charlotte (March 18) and Gardner-Webb (March 21).
Road appointments at Georgia Southern and Davidson will test the Apps in late March before the Citadel visits Boone on March 29.
The Mountaineers will get a final tune-up against non-conference opponent Presbyterian on April 1 before entering conference play in full-swing beginning with league rival Furman (April 3).
Appalachian will then head to Greensboro to face UNCG on April 5 before hosting its final two home conference matches with Chattanooga on April 6 followed by Wofford on April 8.
The regular-season concludes against SoCon tournament finalist Elon on April 9.
The 2013 Southern Conference Championship Tournament will be held Thurs., April 17, through Sunday, April 20 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
