Mountaineers to Host Midweek Match Against Elon

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State men's tennis returns to the courts this week to host Southern Conference opponent Elon University on Wednesday, April 10. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at ASU Tennis Courts.

The Mountaineers (4-13, 2-6 SoCon), who lost their sixth SoCon match, last fell to Chattanooga, 6-1, on April 7.

UTC (9-6, 4-4 SoCon) began the day earning the doubles point. The Mountaineers fought through all three doubles matches, but No. 2 pair Andrew McKinnon and Jen-Willem Kleynhans were the lone victors with an 8-4 win over Chris Smith and John Peacey. 

The Mocs continued to dominate in singles play, as they took the first five positions of the afternoon. Matt Saltsgaver recorded Appalachian's only point with a No. 5 victory, after dropping his first set (2-6), but rebounding with a pair of 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5) wins to wrap up the match. 

Elon (14-6, 7-1) heads to Greensboro, N.C. today for a league match at UNCG. 

The Phoenix picked up their SoCon setback of the season on Sunday, April 7, after dropping a hard-fought 4-3 match to Georgia Southern.

The Phoenix edged ahead with an early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play, including an 8-5 victory from No. 34-ranked Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann at No. 1 for the pair's ninth straight win. 

Singles action unfolded to a three-all tie as the Phoenix posted wins at Nos. 2 and 5, but GSU would return with scores in Nos. 3, 4, and 6 to knot the match. Fortmann remained at No. 1 versus Andrew Dromsky. After dropping his first set, 6-4, he captured a 7-6 (10-5) win in the second set, forcing a third and final set, but Dromsky held off Fortmann, 6-2, in the third for the Eagle victory.
The Mountaineers will play a second weekday match on Friday, April 12 when they host non-conference opponent Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m.
