BOONE, N.C. - Coming off its 11th straight SoCon victory on Monday, Appalachian State University wrestling looks to continue its winning ways against Southern Conference rival, The Citadel, on Friday, Jan. 18 at Varsity Gymnasium.
The first bout between the Mountaineers and the Bulldogs is slated for 6:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Appalachian improved to 6-2 on the season and 3-0 in the conference with a 16-15 victory over Campbell on Monday. The 16-15 win marks the first time since the 1999-2000 season the Apps scored 16 points and won, when they defeated Duke, 16-15 on Jan. 11, 2000.
Redshirt freshman Zack Strickland became the only Mountaineer to remain perfect in duals for the year, going 8-0 with an 11-3 major decision over Campbell's Paul Duggan. Strickland's major decision gave App State a critical four points in a dual that saw nine decisions.
"We're getting better and it's showing in every match," head coach JohnMark Bentley said. "We just got to keep doing the right things and hopefully we will get better on Friday night against The Citadel."
BOSTON APPROACHING 50 WINS
With a 6-1 decision over Campbell's Tanner Bidelspach, senior Brett Boston needs one more win to reach 50 for his career. The senior is 6-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference duals for the season after finishing third in the SoCon at last year's Championships.
Before the season, Boston was named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-SoCon team, earning the same amount of votes as Campbell's Joey Rizzolino. Boston was lone Mountaineer named to the annual team voted on by the conference's coaches.
THE APPALACHIAN LINEUP
The Mountaineers made changes to the lineup against Campbell, seeing two new wrestlers at 184 and 285. Sophomore Jake Johnson filled in for his twin brother, Jesse Johnson, at 184 pounds and came away with a 3-0 decision over Matt Cox and his first career victory in a dual.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Vetell, who wrestled at 174 at the Hokie Open and Keystone Classic earlier in the season, moved up to heavyweight and prevented Campbell's Joe Nolan from capturing four team points. It was the first appearance for Vetell in a dual this season.
Redshirt sophomore Dominic Parisi suffered his first loss at 125 pounds on Monday, as redshirt sophomore Paul Weiss and redshirt freshman Colin Hedash each picked up wins en route to Appalachian's 11th straight victory over the Camels.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Citadel enters Friday's dual with a 2-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in the SoCon with victories over Davidson and a non-conference win over VMI at the Virginia Duals last week. The Bulldogs began the Virginia Duals with those losses to #25 Old Dominion (26-9) and Army (27-19).
The Bulldogs' lineup will feature two wrestlers with 20 or more wins, as Undrakhbayar "Ugi" Khishignyam (141) leads the team with a 26-3 record and is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation by WrestlingReport.com.
Odie Delaney, who is ranked No. 16 by WrestlingReport.com at 285 pounds, enters Friday holding a 23-7 record and a conference-leading, nine pins.
Appalachian controls the all-time series, posting a 40-6-2 record against the Bulldogs, but the Apps have dropped two of the last five meetings. Last season, the Mountaineers squeezed out a 21-19 victory in Charleston for their third conference victory of the season.
