BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State women's tennis coach Colin Crothers has added two new players to his squad. High school seniors Clare Cox (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and Makenzie Lasure (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) signed National Letters of Intent for 2012-13.

"Mackenzie and Clare are two of the best players in North Carolina," said Cruthers. "Mackenzie has repeated as the 3A high school singles champion, and Clare won the 4A doubles championship. Both will make an immediate impact on the program."

Cox has been identified by Tennis Recruiting Network as a four-star recruit and currently ranks as the No. 5 player in North Carolina. She is a three-time all-state honoree and was named all-conference player of the year. Cox led her Grimsley team to its first state crown since 1970.

Lasure ranks just below Cox as the No. 6 North Carolina player. She earned her N.C. 3-A singles title with a 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-1 win last October. Lasure ranks among the nation's top 200 recruits and has posted a 2-0 record against five-star prospects. In high school play, the Asheville senior amassed a 28-0 season, leading her team to the state semifinals.

As for the current Mountaineers, the approaching winter heralds the start of the dual-match season, as the Apps prepare to host their first competition on Saturday, January 21 against North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m.
