Softball Erupts for 37 Runs in DH Sweep at Radford
RADFORD, Va. – History was made on Thursday evening when Appalachian State University softball exploded for 37 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Radford.

The Mountaineers (12-26) broke a program record for runs scored in a doubleheader with 37, while the 20 runs in Game Two topped the single-game record by one run. App State scored 26 runs in two games against N.C. Central on April 25, 2009.

The 20 runs topped the previous high of 19, which App State scored in a 20-19 loss to UNCG on April 26, 2014.

In 12 games leading up to last Sunday's 14-5 win at Georgia State, the Mountaineers scored 31 total runs. Including Sunday's win and the doubleheader sweep on Thursday, App State has scored 51 runs in just 17 innings.

Game One: App State 17, Radford 0 F/5

Appalachian scored at least a run in all five innings in its Game One triumph. The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and never looked back, scoring five runs in the first, seven in the second, two in the third and fourth and one in the fifth.

Following a Tiffany Taynor single to lead off the first, Sarah Warnock deposited a pitch over the right field wall for a 2-0 lead.

With a 5-0 lead in the second, Heather Josey and Caroline Rogers collected RBI singles, while Dani Heichen worked a bases loaded walk.

Later in the inning, Taynor stroked a three-run triple into the right field corner to further extend the App State advantage.

With a 12-0 lead, Pepper Butler would crush a two-run homer. Butler would go on to hit a solo home run in the fifth for her second of the day.

Katie Williford went the distance for the first complete game of her career and first career shutout. Williford went five innings and scattered four hits, while striking out four.

Game Two: App State 20, Radford 3 F/5

Appalachian State picked up right where it left off in Game One and then some. The Apps scored 12 runs in the opening inning, keeping their foot on the gas pedal for a two-game sweep.

In the midst of the 12-run first, the Mountaineers got RBI singles from Cara Parker, Josey and Heichen. Caroline Chambers hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season to cap off the inning.

The Apps would then score four more runs in the second and four in the fifth to clinch the program record for runs in a single game.

Amanda Salentine doubled in the first RBI of her career in a four-run second that also saw RBI singles from Taynor and Josey.

In the fifth, Butler would hit her third home run of the day - a three-run shot to drive in Parker and Rogers. The record-breaking run would score on a Katie Mathewson RBI groundout to shortstop.

Butler led the Mountaineers offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored. Taynor finished 5-for-10 with six RBI. In total, 10 Mountaineers collected multi-hit games in the sweep.

Williford started the second game and went 4.0 innings and was charged with three runs on five hits. Katherine Johnson came into the game in relief and got the final three outs without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out one.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday, April 18 for a doubleheader with No. 9 UL Lafayette in a Sun Belt Conference series. The Ragin' Cajuns will come to the High Country as the highest nationally ranked team to play at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
