BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University field hockey battled the elements on a cold, rainy day to come out on top of the visiting Lancers of Longwood University. The Mountaineers won the highly contested match 1-0 and improved to 5-13 on the season.
Appalachian wore pink warm-up uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness day at Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field.
The match remained scoreless through the first half after Longwood goalkeeper Allison Savage denied shots from Dana Wetmore, Hanna French, and Taylor Cimbalist.
Cimbalist scored the lone goal of the match in the 42nd minute. Cimbalist fired in a rebounded shot from Laura Malinoski to give Appalachian the lead.
The Mountaineer defense held strong the rest of the way through and held on to its one goal advantage.
Appalachian goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi recorded her first shutout of the season. Ceppi had 5 saves in the match including a brillant save to deny Jessica Diaz on the fast break.
The Mountaineers will finish their regular season at home on Sunday when they face Viringia Commmonwealth at 1 p.m.
