BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's soccer fell for the fourth time this season with a 2-0 loss to George Mason on Sunday.
"Today was a huge challenge for our program," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "George Mason has a huge tradition for women's soccer and we knew that coming into the match. We struggled to stick to our style of play, which in the end resulted in a loss. We will get back on it and get better this week, because we face two more great programs this weekend. We are still focused on preparing to truly compete in the Sun Belt."
The Mountaineers (3-4-0) led in shots 11-6, but the Patriots managed four shots on goal to the Mountaineers' one.
George Mason got on the board in the 19th minute off of a Niomi Serrano corner kick. Serrano's corner went to the back post where Sydney Mitchell sent it to the near post on one touch to Kelly Pizzingrilli who was able to knock it in.
The 1-0 score would stand until halftime. After intermission in the 49th minute, the Patriots struck again. Mitchell would tally her second assist on a cross on the endline to Emily Harvey who would put a head on it and five the Patriots the two goal lead.
Sam Childress led the Apps in shots with three, while Erin Settle, Jane Cline, Julia Holz and Kebrina Keys all tallied two shots each. Settle notched the only shot on goal for the Mountaineers.
Amy Kolowsky started the game in net for App State and made one save. Megan Roberson played the second half and also made one save on the afternoon.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 when they travel to James Madison. Kick off is set for 5 p.m.
