Four Athletes Chosen for Appalachian Athletics Hall of Fame

BOONE, N.C. - The most successful hitter in school history, a first-team all-American linebacker and two more football standouts have been selected for induction into the Appalachian State University Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2005 Hall of Fame Class includes: ?€˘ Jim Conger, a two-time all-conference tackle and an honorable mention all-American; ?€˘ Randy Ingle, Appalachian's all-time leader in career batting average and a 1979 first-team all-American; ?€˘ Rico Mack, a two-time all-American and three-time all-SoCon performer on the gridiron; ?€˘ Richard Tickle, an all-Carolinas Conference selection as well as a member of ASU's 75th Anniversary Team at linebacker; The Hall of Fame breakfast will be held prior to Appalachian's 2005 football home-opener against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Tickets for the breakfast can be purchased for $12 by sending a check to the Former Athletes Association, Owens Field House, Boone, NC 28608, no later than August 31. JIM CONGER (Football 1956-59) ... Four-year starter at ASU who never missed a game in his college career ... earned all-North State Conference honors in both 1958 and '59 as a tackle ... was a 1958 Williamson All-America nominee ... played in 40 games, starting 39 ... played full-time on offense, defense and special teams throughout his career ... following his tenure in the High Country, he signed a professional contract with the Buffalo Bills ... played for coaches Bob Broome and Bob Breitenstein ... helped lead the Mountaineers to a pair of second-place finishes in the North State Conference. RANDY INGLE (Baseball 1977-79) ... Appalachian's all-time leader in career batting average (min. 200 AB) at .404 ... also ranks second in ASU history with 11 career triples and fourth in career slugging percentage (.632) ... batted an ASU and SoCon-record .477 in 1979, en route to all-SoCon, SoCon Player of the Year, all-region and first-team all-America accolades ... earned all-SoCon honors in each of his three seasons in the High Country (1977, '78, '79) ... played professionaly in the Atlanta Braves' farm system from 1979-1987 ... currently in his fourth season as manager of the Single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Braves' organization ... also manged Braves' minor league teams in Pulaski (1990-92), Macon (1993), Durham (1996), Greenville (1997-98) and Richmond (1999-2000) ... earned Southern League Manager of the Year honors in 1997 after leading Greenville to the league championship. RICO MACK (Football 1989-92) ... First-team all-American and Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1991, guiding Appalachian to its third SoCon title and a berth in the NCAA I-AA playoffs ... collected 94 tackles in 1990 to pace the squad ... his 347 career stops are eighth-best in Mountaineer history ... also had a team-best 10 tackles for loss in 1990 ... three-time first-team all-SoCon honoree during his final three seasons at ASU (1990, '91, '92) ... in addition to earning first-team all-America honors in 1991, was named a third-team all-American as a sophomore in 1990 ... named SoCon defensive player of the week after keying a 27-9 victory over ninth-ranked The Citadel (Sept. 29, 1990) ... also earned SoCon defensive player of the week accolades following ASU's 24-0 shutout of James Madison (Nov. 17, 1990) and again after spearheading a 17-3 win at Wake Forest (Oct. 5, 1991) ... played professionally for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1994. RICHARD TICKLE (Football 1961-64) ... One of just three linebackers chosen for Appalachian's 75th Anniversary Team in 2003 ... earned all-Carolinas Conference plaudits as a senior (1964) ... played before tackles were kept as an official statistic ... anchored a stout defense that surrendered a school-low 783 yards in 1963 (87.0 yards/game) ... also a member of the 1962 squad which allowed just 812 yards passing (81.2 yards/game), also a school record ... ASU went 23-13 during his playing days, including a 14-5-2 mark in Carolinas Conference contests.
