Short Week Leaves Battle for the Belt Race Close
Short Week Leaves Battle for the Belt Race Close

BOONE, N.C. — Due to the spring recess break and the short week it provided, Appalachian State University football's Battle for the Belt remained largely unchanged as the race continues to be tight with first and second place separated by just 325 points.

Team “PrimeTime,” which is co-captained by Taylor Lamb and Shaedon Meadors continues to lead the pack with 5,425 points while “Wrecking Crew,” co-captained by A.J. Howard and Josh Thomas, continues to close in on the top seed with 5,100 points.

Beau Nunn and Terrence Upshaw's “The Wanted” remained strong in third place (4,796 pts.) after catapulting there last week, Eric Boggs and Jalin Moore's 'Moneybag' stayed at fourth (4,452 pts.) and 'Bread Winners', co-captained by Myquon Stout and Ike Lewis, finished the week in fifth (3,846 pts.).

Teams captained by outside linebacker Devan Stringer (3,787 pts.), offensive lineman Colby Gossett (3,514 pts.) and tight end Levi Duffield (2,580 pts.) round out the Week 5 standings.

The Battle for the Belt is Appalachian State football's offseason intra-squad competition. Points are awarded for student-athletes' achievements in the offseason strength and conditioning program, performance in the classroom, service to the community and all-around character.

Captains draft their teams for a total of 10-11 players. They compete for points via performance in team competition on Tuesday mornings. Weights, sprints, conditioning, community service, being an exemplary teammate, and putting in extra training sessions are all ways to earn points.

Points can also be earned by being a “juiceman” during training sessions. Juicemen are athletes who bring a positive attitude and relentless energy to training sessions. The tone they set is contagious and exemplifies the App State way. At the end of each session, strength coaches meet and select Juicemen for the day.

Juicemen have been influential so far allowing teams to move quickly through the standings or increase their lead. Tied for most Juicemen points are teams “PrimeTime” and “The Wanted” with 225. “Wrecking Crew” also just behind those two with 200 Juicemen points, while “Moneybag” and “Bread Winners” have 150 and 100 points, respectively. Team “FBG” has 75 Juicemen points.
