SANDESTIN, Fla. – Appalachian State shot a team-297 is tied for ninth with UT Arlington following the opening round of the 2017 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championships on Sunday at Raven Golf Club.
Teams endured a three and half hour rain delay mid-morning before going back out to complete the first round about 1:30 p.m. CT. Teams finished their first rounds, and the second round was underway when darkness ended play around 7:30 p.m.
Teams will finish the second round, of which App has played about nine holes, and play a third round on Monday. The top four teams in stroke play advance to match play.
App State (+13) is a stroke back of Louisiana (+12) for eighth and five back of Texas State and Arkansas State (+6). Georgia State (-6) holds a six-shot lead over Troy (E) after one round. Georgia Southern (+1) is third.
Sophomore Alex Burris (Greensboro, N.C.) carded a 2-under 69 with five birdies and three bogeys in his round. He finished the opening round in sixth, playing his final 11 holes at 6-under.
Freshman Noah Schneider (Jackson, Miss.) fired a 4-over 75 and is tied for 36th. He had three birdies in his opening round.
Freshman Tripp Summerlin (Summerfield, N.C.) is tied for 41st after 18 holes following a round of 76 (+5).
Senior Patrick Moriarty (Rockville, Md.) had a pair of birdies in his round of 77 (+6), and freshman Walter Brinker (Sanford, N.C.) put together a round of 83 (+12).
App's final hole of the opening round was its only flaw in an otherwise solid first round. The Mountaineers played No. 9 at 10-over toward their team score to slip in the standings.
Play resumes on Monday morning 8:30 a.m.
