App State Ends Regular Season With Setback to Elon

ELON, N.C.  -- Appalachian State University women's tennis (5-18) ended the regular season with a 7-0 defeat to Elon on Wednesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers struggled to get anything going against a solid Elon team that has 16 wins this season. Appalachian fell in the doubles portion while suffering the singles loss. App will now await its opponent for the 2017 Sun Belt Tournament held in New Orleans from April 20-23.

Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan suffered a 6-2 decision to Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi as the No. 2 tandem. The Phoenix took the 1-0 lead after Gabrielle Wreder, and Megan Mullen fell to Natalia Janowicz/Maria Paraja as the top duo in the lineup. Melissa Machado and Taylor Bygrave was toppled by Suzanne Zenoni and Kirsten Ward, 6-3.

Appalachian tried to get some momentum going in singles play, but fell in all six singles contests in straight sets. Zupan and Swope stand at eight wins in doubles play for the most on the team going into the tournament, while Bygrave has a team-high eight victories in singles action. Three other Mountaineers have seven wins and Rebecca Morse has six victories under her belt.
