BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (12-7) put on an impressive performance in a convincing 5-2 triumph over Gardner-Webb (11-12) on Monday afternoon at Stadium Courts.
The Mountaineers snapped the Runnin' Bulldogs' three-match win streak coming into the contest, while the victory is the ninth in the past 11 matches. App swept the doubles portion of the contest before claiming the first four singles decisions over the visitors.
“We beat a very good Gardner-Webb team that came in on a winning streak,” said head coach Bob Lake. “Everyone contributed to this win today, and I couldn't be more proud of the team. We have one match left, and we want to continue to play this type of tennis going into the Sun Belt Tournament.”
The Mountaineers wasted no time in the doubles portion with Scott Webster and Milo Bargeron quickly dispatching Johan Fors/Paul Hogan, 6-1, as the No. 1 tandem in the lineup to improve to 9-2 this season. Clinching doubles and giving App a 1-0 lead was the senior duo of Trey Morris and Jack Maddocks, who toppled Maximillian Scholl and Breno Plentz, 6-4. The duo of Morris/Maddocks moves to 8-2 this season.
Ending doubles play on a high note was Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich, as the pairing earned a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Ross Gilbert and Adam Schmidt.
With a 1-0 lead, the Mountaineers started strong and never looked back where the Mountaineers from 1-4 picked up straight-set wins. Maddocks got things going thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hogan before Webster knocked off Scholl in an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win. Webster snapped Scholl's eight-match win streak and handed GWU's No. 1 just his fourth loss of the season.
Morris clinched the win for Appalachian after downing Plentz in a 6-3, 6-4 win as the No. 3 in the lineup. Continuing the solid day for App was Bargeron, as the freshman netted a straight-set 6-3, 7-5 win over Schmidt in the fourth slot. Bargeron joins Morris, Maddocks and Webster as one of four Mountaineers with at least 12 wins.
Both Pavkovich and Brea would fall valiantly in three sets. Pavkovich fell to Fors, 6-2, 2-6, 2-6, while Brea suffered a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 4-10 decision to Gilbert.
App will end the regular season on Saturday against Davidson on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Morris and Maddocks will be recognized before the match for their commitment to the program.
