App State Suffers Setback in Valiant Performance

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University men's tennis (11-7) fell to a tough Georgia Southern team in a valiant 4-1 setback on Sunday afternoon at Stadium Courts.

Despite the score, the Mountaineers hung tough with a Georgia Southern squad that has 17 wins this season. GASO captured the doubles point, and three of the four finished singles matches.

Scott Webster and Milo Bargeron cruised to their eighth win of the season as a tandem with a 6-1 victory over Dani Casablancas and Christian Kerrigan, 6-1, which would get the Apps off to a fast start. However, the Eagles claimed the next two matches to pick up the doubles point.

Alex Pavkovich and Alex Brea  fell as the No. 3 tandem to Artemie Amari and Stefano Di Aloy, 6-1. In a hard-fought match, the duo of Jack Maddocks and Trey Morris fell by a slight margin, 6-4, to Diego Finkelstein and Eddie Landin.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 2-0 after Pavkovich suffered a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Artemie Amari as the No. 5 in the lineup. Webster brought the Apps to within one point, 2-1, after his team-leading 12th win of the season over JC Alcala, 6-2, 6-1. Morris was toppled by his opponent as the No. 3 in the lineup to Di Aloy 6-1, 6-4.

GASO clinched the match after Bargeron fell in three sets to Finkelstein 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6. Bargeron fell down a set and had to force a third frame thanks to a tiebreaking win. Maddocks' single match would be a marathon despite going unfinished. After falling in the first set to Landin 6-4, the senior came back to tie the match with a second-set win, 6-4. Trailing 5-1 in the third stanza, Maddocks came all the way back to force a tiebreaker at 6-6.

Brea was trailing to Santiago Suarez 4-6, 1-4 before the match went unfinished.

App will look to finish the four-match homestand at 3-1 with a 2 p.m. match against Gardner-Webb on Monday. Stay tuned for updates as rainy weather is expected to hit the area.
