ST. LOUIS — Appalachian State University wrestling finished day one of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship on Thursday, having all four wrestlers advanced to the second day of action.
The Mountaineers were led by Denzel Dejournette at the heavyweight division as he won a huge major decision match over Oregon State's Cody Crawford, 11-1, to move to round two of the championship matches. Dejournette then went toe-to-toe against Minnesota's Michael Kroells where he fell in a heartbreaking double overtime 5-3 decision.
In the 125-pound division, Vito Pasone fell in by technical fall to open up against SIUE's Freddie Rodriguez, but would get a victory in the consolation bracket due to medical forfeit by Penn State to move on to day two.
Colby Smith stayed close early at 133 pounds but Lehigh's Scotty Parker got the 17-3 major decision to push Smith to wrestlebacks. There, Smith advanced on a medical forfeit by Old Dominion to move forward.
Matt Zovistoski dropped an 11-3 major decision to Iowa's Brandon Sorensen to start the day at 149 pounds, but would battle back by taking the 9-7 decision win over NC State's Sam Speno to stay alive.
