DAYTONA, Fla. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (9-6) came back from a 1-0 deficit in doubles play to upend Oral Roberts (5-8) on Wednesday morning in Daytona, Fla.
The Mountaineers finish 7-5 on the 12-match road trip while winning six of their previous seven contests. App needed to win four singles matches after dropping the doubles portion. The win also gives App its third win streak of at least three matches this season.
“Today was a great test for us, especially when we face a deficit going into singles,” said head coach Bob Lake. “We bounced back very well, and the guys stepped up when we needed them to.
Appalachian's lone win in doubles play came from No. 1 duo Scott Webster and Milo Bargeron, who improved to 5-1 as a tandem with a 6-1 win over Jan Pehnec and Kenneth Boykin.
However, the Owls narrowly picked up the next two doubles matches by two points in both contests. Trey Morris and Jack Maddocks fell to Barnabas Koncz and Amar Saletovic, 6-4. In the tiebreaking match, Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich suffered a 7-5 setback to Michael Sosnowski and Alvaro Santamaria.
With ORU leading 1-0, Brea stepped up in his singles match to tie up the contest in the No. 6 slot, as he dealt Eddy Leardini a straight-set defeat, 6-1, 6-0. Webster gave App State the lead for good when he toppled Koncz, 6-1, 6-2, and won his seventh-straight match to improve to 11-3 in singles.
Maddocks reeled in his 10th singles win of the season when he earned a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 win over Pehnec Appalachian held the 3-1 edge before Morris clinched the win over Saletovic 6-2, 6-3 as the No. 3 in the lineup.
App will have 15 days off before they finish the season with five-straight home matches, beginning with UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 31
