Men's Tennis Suffers Narrow Loss at Mercer

MACON, Ga.  -  Appalachian State University men's tennis (6-6) nearly completed a comeback while trailing 3-1 but fell short in the valiant loss to Mercer, 4-3, on Saturday morning at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers nearly upended the Bears' 13-match win streak and their first home loss this season. While trailing the hosts, 3-1, Milo Bargeron won his fourth-straight match over Fernando Guardia, 6-4, 6-2, in a matchup between No. 4's. Scott Webster then tied up the match over Nicolas Guillon, 6-3, 6-3, with his team-leading eighth win of the season.

However, the Bears would capture the last match when Jack Maddocks was in a back-and-forth battle with Sam Philp, but fell 7-6, 6-3.

The Bears (15-2) captured four of six singles matches after App won the doubles point. Maddocks and Trey Morris won their fourth-straight match together as the No. 1 tandem over Guillona and Guardia, 6-1. Mercer tied up the doubles match at 1-1 when Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich fell 6-3 to Ruben Vanoppen/E. Tsiranidis, 6-3. But Webster and Bargeron came through in the clutch with a 6-3 triumph over Philp and Stuart.

Campbell Stone fell to Tsiranidis 6-1, 6-0 as the No. 6 in the lineup, leading to Mercer tying the match. Pavkovich then fell to Vanoppen in the ensuing finish before Morris suffered a 6-3, 6-2, decision to his counterpart, giving the Bears a 3-1 edge.

Webster improves to 8-3 this season while Bargeron is  7-4 on the season.

App will look to bounce back with a quick turnaround tomorrow against Bethune-Cookman at 9 a.m. in Daytona Beach, Fla.
