BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (4-10) suffered a 6-1 setback at home on Senior Day to Grand Canyon (5-4) in the afternoon.
The Apps recognized Megan Mullen, Gabrielle Wreder and McKayla Zupan for their commitment and dedication to the program.
Rebecca Morse was the lone student-athlete to pick up a win that would give App its only point on the day. Morse notched her fourth triumph of the season, her third in which came as the No. 2 in the lineup.
Grand Canyon would take the doubles point and five of six singles for the win. Melissa Machado and Taylor Bygrave picked up the 6-3 win over Celina Buhr and Kylie Waschuk to improve to 2-0 as a tandem. The No. 2 duo in Heidi Swope and Zupan fell to Lana Rinaldi and Emilia Occhipinti, 6-2.
Mullen and Wreder fell as the No. 1 tandem, 6-4, Tatum Prudhomme/Susan Baklini to round out singles play.
App tried to turn things around in single play while trailing, 1-0, but couldn't get anything going. Bygrave saw her seven-match win streak snapped as the No. 5 in the lineup to Rinaldi, 6-1,6-0. Machado fell in the four slot, 6-3, 6-2 to Buhr before Swope was toppled by Prudhomme, 6-4, 6-3.
Wreder suffered a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) defeat in a valiant effort to Baklini, followed by Morse's win, 7-5, 6-4 over Alexandra Petrzalkov in a matchup between No. 2's. Mullen finished the day falling to Occhipinti, 6-2, 6-3.
App will look to bounce back against Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Boiling Springs, N.C.
