LAKE MARY, Fla. – Freshman Tripp Summerlin (Summerfield, N.C.) is tied for fifth following a career-low 69 (-2) in the second round and Appalachian State is fourth as a team after 36 holes on Monday at the Frontier Secure Intercollegiate at Heathrow Country Club.
Summerlin had four birdies and a double bogey in his second 18 of the day to card his lowest collegiate round to-date. He is 1-under for the event with an opening 72 (+1) and is one stroke back of four golfers, all tied at 2-under.
App State finished the day in fourth, back of leader Western Carolina (-3). The Mountaineers are eight back of Keiser University for third and two shots ahead of Florida Gulf Coast (+21) and host Stetson (+21). App finished at 19-over through two rounds (292-295).
App's Noah Schneider is tied for 28th after finishing strong with a 72 (+1) in the second round. He had three birdies in his afternoon round and is 6-over for the tournament, one stroke ahead of senior Patrick Moriarty (Rockville, Md.). Moriarty opened strong with an even-par 71 and had four birdies on his opening nine of the day, but finished with a 78 (+7). He also had an eagle on the par-5 second in his second round.
Sophomore Alex Burris (Greensboro, N.C.) opened with a 2-over 73 and finished with a 79 (+8_ in the afternoon round to slip to 40th. He had three birdies on the day.
Freshman Walker Brinker (Sanford, N.C.) struggled in an opening round 83, but played better in the afternoon with a pair of birdies in a round of 76. He is 54th.
Sophomore Thomas Hodges (Waxhaw, N.C.) shot an 82-81 playing as an individual.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
