BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State's football program capped a busy week with an eventful Saturday practice that included about 60 scrimmage snaps in Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The Mountaineers continued their spring workouts Monday, Wednesday and Friday before taking the field again for a weekend practice with drill work and several scrimmage segments. The defense enjoyed a strong showing, as the only touchdown came when quarterback Jacob Huesman connected with receiver Zy Letman on a third-and-goal pass from the 3-yard line. Letman made a diving, one-handed catch on a fade route toward the back-right corner of the end zone.
"At the end of spring, you have some guys dinged up, so you have a lot of young guys in there, and sometimes you don't have a cohesive group," App State head coach Scott Satterfield said. "That makes it harder on the offense, and the defense is flying around, doing some good things."
With the Mountaineers testing their depth and resting some players relatively late in their spring schedule, members of the defensive line had several big plays. In a span of five snaps, defensive end Okon Godwin recorded a quarterback pressure, posted a tackle for a 6-yard loss on a running play and swarmed to the ball to assist linebacker Jordan Fehr with an open-field tackle.
“Depth makes sure that nobody is tired, and we make sure that everybody knows the whole playbook,” Godwin said. “It doesn't matter what group is in, when the '3's go in, they look just like the '1's, and nobody's tired. Everybody's moving fast, and that's how we try to keep the speed of the defense up.”
Nose tackle Myquon Stout, a returning starter, continued his standout spring with a quarterback pressure. Appalachian State also got noteworthy contributions from young linemen such as Chris Willis, Elijah Diarrassouba, John "Baer" Hunter and Emmanuel Scott, a transfer from Shaw.
"Those guys, they play so hard," Satterfield said. "What they're doing is getting into their gaps and making plays in the backfield. Myquon Stout is having an unbelievable spring. He's unblockable right now playing the nose position, and a lot of young guys are doing well."
Offensively, with four quarterbacks sharing the workload, running back Marcus Williams Jr. gained 26 yards on his first carry and had two more runs of at least 7 yards. Mock Adams made an 18-yard catch in the early going, and kicker Michael Rubino was accurate on his field goals, making two attempts of more than 40 yards. The last attempt covered 46 yards.
"We haven't had many live kicks this spring," Satterfield said. "Rubino kicked the ball well."
Appalachian State will resume practice next week and wrap up spring workouts March 4.
