Mountaineers Fall to No. 3 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis (3-7) fell to No. 3 North Carolina (10-1) on Tuesday evening, 6-1, in Chapel Hill at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

App State had its hands full against the third-ranked team in the nation that featured four student-athletes ranked in the top 70. 

Taylor Bygrave was the lone Mountaineer to pick up a point for the Black and Gold as she won her first set against Kane, 7-5, fell in her second set, 3-6, and then outlasted Kane in the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-4). Bygrave's impressive triumph on Tuesday gives the sophomore her fourth-straight win in singles competition.

At No. 2 doubles, Megan Mullen and Gabrielle Wreder were defeated by Cassandra Vazquez and No. 40 Alexa Graham, 6-1, and Melissa Machado and Rebecca Morse fell to No. 70 Makenna Jones and Maggie Kane, 6-2.

No. 1 doubles went unfinished with Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan  trailing No. 3 Hayley Carter and No. 19 Jessie Aney, 5-2.

Swope lined up in the No. 1 slot but fell to Carter, 6-3, 6-1, and Morse was defeated by Aney, 6-1, 6-0.

Machado faced Graham in No. 3 singles but fell, 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 4 matchup, Wreder dropped the match, 6-0, 6-2.

Mullen fell to Vazquez in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

The Mountaineers look forward to returning home after a six-match road trip on Friday against Lipscomb. The first serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
