Box Score BOONE, N.C. –– Appalachian State University men's basketball kept the momentum rolling on Monday night with a 83-78 win over first-place Georgia Southern inside the Holmes Center behind a career performance from Griffin Kinney who notched a career-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the effort.
The Mountaineers (8-16, 3-10 Sun Belt) trailed the Eagles (16-10, 9-4 Sun Belt) by as many as nine points in the first half at 28-19, but a 22-5 run from the Black and Gold stormed the Apps back into a 41-33 halftime lead.
A layup from Kinney ignited the Mountaineer run and down 30-29, Patrick Good hit one of his three 3-pointers to give App State a 32-30 lead. Craig Hinton extended a 10-0 run to 13-0 with a tough wing three, but the Eagles' Ike Smith answered on the other end.
App State ended the half with a scurry under the rim that saw three offensive rebounds end with a Hinton layup to end the half.
Appalachian would maintain a safe distance from the Georgia Southern in the second half and would lead by a game-high 15 points at 60-45 after free throws from Kinney. With a 71-61 advantage and time winding down on the shot clock, Good would step back well beyond the arc to hit a dagger 3-pointer with two seconds left.
The Eagles would cut the lead down to seven and then six and eventually five points late in the game, but free throws from the Mountaineers helped seal the five-point victory.
