App State Nets First Road Win at Radford

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (2-5) rolled past Radford (0-3) by a score of 6-1 on Saturday for the first road win of the season in Virginia.

Appalachian took home two of three doubles matches and five of six singles victories for the win. The Mountaineers gave a resilient performance after falling in the past two contests.

The Apps started off fast with Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan downing Drousile Dzeuboue/Claire Nguyen, 6-1 in a matchup between the No. 2 duos. Swope and Zupan improve to 4-3 this season for a team-high in double victories. Clinching the doubles match for App was the No. 3 tandem in Rebecca Morse and Melissa Machado, as the pair dealt Karlie Pope and Yuliia Popova a 6-2 setback.

Three of the singles triumphs went on to three sets, but Machado was the first to finish in the No. 4 slot with a straight-set 6-3, 6-0 victory against Popova. Morse valiantly fell to Dzeubo, 6-1, 6-3 before Megan Mullen notched a straight-set win of her own as the No. 6 in the lineup. 6-2, 6-1, over Pope.

With the singles matches tied at 1-1 and App holding a 3-1 lead overall, Gabrielle Wreder  came away with a big 6-2, 6-4 win in the three slot to clinch the win for the Mountaineers. 

Swope capped off her solid day with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 win in the No. 2 slot over Natalie Sayer, while Taylor Bygrave finished off the day earning a 6-3, 7-6 (10-7) victory.

The Apps will continue the road trip and look for their third win of the season at USC Upstate on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
