JONESBORO, Ark. –– Appalachian State University men's basketball withstood 33 total fouls and four foul outs and posted three scorers in double digits, but fell to Arkansas State by one point on Saturday night, 79-78.

The Mountaineers (6-15, 1-9 Sun Belt) led for 26:39 of the contest with Ronshad Shabazz leading the way with 19 points. Tyrell Johnson finished with 16, while Craig Hinton, who earned his first career start, notched his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Black and Gold took a 39-37 lead into halftime over the Red Wolves (17-6, 8-2 Sun Belt), but would be outscored 42-39 in the second period to fall narrowly by one point.

With 6:30 left in the game, two free throws from Emarius Logan would put the Mountaineers up 64-58, but the Red Wolves got a three from Rashad Lindsey and a three-point play from Devin Carter to tie the game at 64-64 in just under one minute of game time.

App State would gain the lead two more times on a jumper from Shabazz and free throws from Jake Babic, but a three-point play from the Red Wolves' Carter would give A-State a lead they would not relinquish despite Appalachian's best efforts.

Down 75-69, Bennett Holley, would come off the bench and knock down a corner three immediately to cut the deficit to three. Then again, down 77-75, Patrick Good would bang home a three only to do it again down 79-75, but with one second left there was not enough time for the Mountaineers.

Appalachian will head to Little Rock for a Monday night showdown with the Trojans. Tip time is set for 9:05 p.m. ET.
