JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - The Mountaineers snatched nine top-ten finishes and five qualified for the finals as Appalachian State University women's track and field finalized action on day one of the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational Friday night.
After five qualifying rounds, three short sprinters and two hurdlers will represent the Black and Gold in the final rounds of the 60 meters, 200 meters and the 60-meter hurdles tomorrow, Feb. 4 at ETSU. Freshman LaBria King produced the two fastest 60-meter times of the day running 7.61 in the preliminaries and clocking 7.62 in the semifinal round. Joining King in the finals will be Chelsey Hargrave who ran two personal bests of 7.94 in the prelims and 7.79 in the semifinal round to place sixth going into tomorrow. Senior Catherine Crawford pushed out the best 200-meter time of the day out of 100 competitors with a personal best of 25.15 that qualified her for the finals. Lastly, hurdlers Imani Chapman and Taylor Drummonds punched their spots in the finals after Chapman tied her seasonal-best time of 8.83 to grab the third qualifying spot and Drummonds ran 9.41 to snag the fourth qualifying spot.
In the 5,000-meter race, Madison Simmons was the first Mountaineer to cross the line in ninth with a personal best of 18:55.50. Following her in 12th was Alison Peters who shaved one minute and thirteen seconds off her personal best to clock a time of 19:00.88.
In the first Distance Medley Relay of the season, Grace Brooks, Ellen Spencer, Sarah Venable and Megan Scannell collectively ran a time of 12:43.29 to place fifth, which currently ranks as the fastest relay time in the Sun Belt.
In the field events, three Mountaineers landed inside the top-ten in the pole vault. Drummonds and Lainey Hunnicutt both cleared 11-11.75 (3.65m) to tie for second, Hannah Emery jumped 11-5.75 (3.50m) to tie for fifth and Sofia San Miguel vaulted 10-11.75 (3.35m) to tie for ninth. In the high jump, Hunter Welborn tied for second gliding over the bar at 5-5.25 (1.66m), and Makayla Roten tied for fifth with a season's best of 5-4.25 (1.63m). Producing her second-best jump of the season was Ila Mumford who landed in ninth in the long jump with a leap of 18-1 (5.51m). Lastly, making her weight throw debut was Samantha Welborn who tossed a one-foot personal best of 53-1 (16.18m) to take sixth.
