BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (1-1) rolled past Presbyterian (2-2) with a score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers took home the doubles point with two of three doubles matches while capturing four of six singles points. App picked up its first win of the season and can improve to 2-1 tomorrow against Lees-McRae at the DVC.
“It was great to see us get our first win today,“ said head coach Bob Lake. “I was proud of the way we came back after dropping the first doubles match, then from there, the momentum rolled into singles play.”
The Apps fell in the first doubles match with Alex Pavkovich and Alex Brea falling to Jaimie Lopez and Diego Manzanas in a tough 6-3 match. From that point on, the Apps turned the tide taking both doubles matches and the first four singles contests that finished.
Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks took home a 6-4 win over Ben Kelly and Joel Roberts as the top duo. In the third and final doubles match, Milo Bargeron and Trey Morris turned in a tightly-contested 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaking win to give App the 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Maddocks got things started for the Black and Gold with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win over Lopez followed by a Webster victory against Manzanas in a battle at the No. 1 slot that went to a tiebreak in the second set, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
At the No. 2, Morris clinched the win for the Apps against Brandon Mills, 6-3, 6-3. Bargeron would continue his solid day recording a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Alejandro Bejar as the the No. 4 in the books.
Brea competed in singles action as the No. 6 in the lineup but fell to Roberts, 6-4, 6-3. Pavkovich also would fall in the five slot, taking his opponent (Kelly) to a tiebreak in the first set before suffering the 6-1 defeat.
First serve against Lees-McRae is set for 9 a.m. tomorrow as the Apps look to sweep the weekend.
