No. 16 Wrestling Battles Blue Devils in Rematch

BOONE, N.C. — A little over one year after the Mountaineers upset No. 24 Duke in Boone en route to the program's first national ranking, Appalachian State University wrestling will once again battle the Blue Devils, this time in Durham, for a non-conference showdown.

The 16th-ranked Mountaineers (9-2, 4-0 Southern Conference) are coming off two big home wins, picking up a 23-10 win over Clarion before remaining undefeated in league action by downing The Citadel, 34-15.

Individually, freshman Colby Smith continues to shine and was recognized by the league as the SoCon Wrestler of the Week  after his performance last week. He picked up a dominating pin over The Citadel's Andrew Szalwinski in just 2:47 and then added onto his day by getting a 14-2 major decision over Roshaun Cooley of Clarion. In just his first year, Smith currently leads the team in wins with an astounding 20 wins.

Right behind him is No. 15 sophomore Matt Zovistoski at 149 pounds and No. 13 senior Denzel Dejournette with 19 wins apiece. Junior Forrest Przybysz is also close behind on the win total, posting 17 so far this season. All three wrestlers won all of their matches in their last time out.

Duke enters Tuesday 2-3 and 0-1 in ACC after competing in a multitude of opens early, rather than dual matches. The Blue Devils began the season with two close losses to Oregon State and Wisconsin before finishing 13th at the Southern Scuffle. Since then, Duke made quick work of Hofstra (33-10) and LIU Post (36-8) before falling to nationally ranked NC State in their lone conference match so far.

The Blue Devils will be wrestling two nationally ranked opponents for the Mountaineers to contend with, at the 174-pound and heavyweight divisions. No. 15 Connor Bass enters Tuesday 15-5 at 174 and No. 7 Jacob Kasper enters the match 19-1.

The heavyweight showdown will be the marquee rematch of the Southern Scuffle where Kasper was able to win a tight 9-7 victory over Dejournette.

Set to begin at 7 p.m., the showdown will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra/ESPN3 and available on the WatchESPN app. Fans will also be able to follow live scoring on TrackWrestling for free.
