App State Readies for the ETSU Invite

BOONE, N.C. -- Appalachian State University men's track and field will kick off the new year at the ETSU Track & Field Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn. on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14. This meet will be scored.

"The ETSU Invitational has always been and is a great way for us to start our indoor season," said head coach John Weaver. "There will be plenty of competition for us in evaluating the status of our athletes in terms of fitness, speed and strength after a long holiday layoff. I am sure they are anxious to get started as well. We are able to compete everyone who is healthy, and this does a lot to get us started as a team for the indoor season.  Also, the closeness of ETSU to us gives us a nice perk in not having to travel very far this early in the season."

Friday's events will start at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw, and 10 a.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles preliminary. On Saturday, the women's 3,000-meter run will hit the track first at 8 a.m. and the field events will start a noon with the men's long jump and the women's pole vault.

Last Time on the Track

App State ended 2016 at the JDL Meet in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Dec. 3. Two freshmen had breakout performances with Jabari Johnson grabbing first place in the 200 meters (21.85) and Elliott Graves snatching first place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.33). Senior William Buckley finished third in the 60 meters with a time of 6.90 and 800-meter star Ryan Hastings opened up the season with a time of 1:57.15 to place fifth in the 800 meters. In the circle, Nathan Milch and Ellsworth Parham landed in third and fourth respectively both throwing over 54 feet with Parham registering a new indoor PR.
